Chapter Five

“Ugh! I can’t get it!”

“Don’t worry… It’s tricky at first but you’ll figure it out.”

.:|:.

T.J. and Aliya were going over the basics of airbending in front of the door Aliya had so fascinated by. They had been working for hours with little results.

“Hey, I think I felt something that time!” encouraged T.J.

“That was the wind, not me… I don’t think I’m cut out to be an airbender,” complained Aliya.

“Of course you are! If you weren’t you wouldn’t be the Avatar. Come on, try it one more time,” said T.J.

Aliya sighed but did as she was told. He was her master after all.

She got into her stance, her legs apart and hands in front of her. She slowly took a deep breath and then let it back out.

Her legs were in a form similar to an earthbending stance, but her upper body was twisted to her left. Her arms were positioned in front of her, slightly bent, with her palms facing each other.

As if on cue, Aliya quickly threw her right leg in front of her left, turning her body completely around. She pushed her right hand sharply in front of her as a gust of wind pushed T.J. down. The fifteen year old looked up at Aliya with a huge grin spreading from ear to ear. “You did it!” he shouted.

Aliya was in shock. Her body had frozen and her eyes had grown to the maximum. Her mouth hung open slightly as T.J. came up and waved his hand in front of her face.

“Hello? Anyone home in there?” he asked.

Aliya blinked a few times before responding. “Uh… yeah. What just happened?” she asked.

“Well, you just airbent and knocked me over,” replied T.J.

“Oh… okay.”

.:|:.

“Princess Azula, we are nearing the air temple but night is approaching. Do you wish to drop anchor?”

“No. Stay on coarse. I want to get there before we loose the Avatar again.” Azula paused. “Send for Ty lee. I wish to speak to her.”

“Yes your majesty.”

.:|:.

Inside the ship was a woman dressed entirely in pink. Her long brown hair, woven tightly into a braid, lay simply on the floor while she performed a handstand. Her eyes were closed as if meditating, building up her aura. She was so calm and peaceful that she fell over when her door suddenly opened with a slam.

“Princess Azula wishes to speak to you!” shouted a servant.

“Ow! Hey, you could have knocked you know,” said Ty lee as she stood from her toppled position on the floor. “Why does she want to speak to me?”

“She didn’t say. Now… Hurry up!

Ty lee sighed as she walked up to the deck. I wonder what she wants now. Ugh… I wish I had gone with Mai… Ah! Okay Ty lee stop thinking like this! It’s bad for your aura!
Ty lee quickly fixed her expression before turning the corner and faced Azula.

“Ty lee! How are you? We haven’t been able to talk much lately,” said Azula in her sweetest, most fake voice.

“I’ve been fine, thank you. I was just down meditating when someone found that he wanted to slam my door open. No worries though, nothing is damaged. Now… what is it that you wish to speak to me about Azula?” asked Ty lee with a sense of perkiness that could only be found in the acrobat.

Azula’s expression flashed to annoyance but quickly reverted back to her original smile. She walked up to Ty lee and put her hand on her shoulder. “Why Ty lee, what’s the rush? I was just asking how you have been. Best friends have to stay connected, right? I mean, we just let Mai stay in her little depressed world and look what happened! She married my pitiful excuse of a brother!” Azula started walking further toward the front of the ship, taking Ty lee with her. Ty lee wasn’t sure where this was going, and she didn’t want to find out.

“Umm… Azula? Where are you going with this?” asked Ty lee hesitantly.

“Ty lee… I can trust you right?” Azula’s voice grew significantly softer. “I can trust that you will make the right decisions and follow orders… my orders, right?” Azula had turned and was facing Ty lee, their faces a foot apart. “I can trust that you are loyal to no one but the Fire Nation, to me. Ty lee… I have a plan that will give us our rightful places in this world. Me being the queen of the Fire Nation and you… well, you being what ever it is that you want to be. A plan that will get rid of Zuzu and our beloved old friend Mai. A plan that will get rid of the Avatar forever.”

Ty lee swallowed and widened her eyes in fear. Whatever Azula had in mind could not be good… and obviously it involved her. “H-how do you plan on doing that, Azula?”

Azula made a wicked smile and said, “You’ll find out in time. Right now, we have to worry about finding the Avatar and seeing if she is worth anything.”

“You mean you know who the Avatar is? Who? Who is she?” asked Ty lee in amazement.

“She is a young waterbending peasant from the Southern Water Tribe. When we went there a few days ago, she had already gone to the Southern Air Temple to start her airbending training. That is why we are going there… so we can… speak with her.”

Azula smiled wickedly in her head. Everything was going according to plan. She watched as Ty lee’s eyes squinted in concentration; watched her try to piece together the puzzle in her head.

“What do I have to do with anything? What is it exactly that you want me to do Azula?” asked Ty lee with a hint of suspicion in her voice.

“Well… You know how people seem afraid of me for some reason. I need you to follow the Avatar in case she gets away. I’m relying on you to keep track of her. Can you do that for me Ty lee?” asked Azula sweetly.

Ty lee cast Azula a sideways glance before responding. “Yes, I can do that. But, why can’t you do it? You’re a much better tracker than me.”

“Oh me? I will be going on a little detour you could say. I’ll catch up with you eventually. The Avatar will most likely head to the Earth Kingdom to search for an earthbending master and then the Fire Nation. I’m just going to get a little… ahead in the game.”

Azula turned and grasped Ty lee by the shoulders while looking at her straight in the eye. Her face contorted into her most serious expression before she said, “I’m counting on you Ty lee. Don’t let me down like Mai did… Don’t let me down.”

Ty lee’s eyes grew in horror as she realized the real meaning behind Azula’s words as the princess turned and walked into the shadows.
